For several artists in Tokyo’s hip-hop scene, night and the moon keep coming back as a starting point. In ookami, 18easy drives at night under the moonlight, away from the noise of the city, just him and the car radio. The track isn’t reaching for effect: it captures a pause, a moment to breathe between two days. Bugseed & Zoromegaten lay their rhymes down under the moon to hold up mentally, betting on richness of words over richness of wallet. In the title track of the AWESOMEWAVE playlist, RhymeTube talks about waking up at sunrise and his family life, fifteen years into his career. One image runs through the whole track: our lives move like waves.
The selection also shows a scene that doesn’t look away from reality. In WINNER, Deey describes loneliness and the pressure of failure, and lands on a simple idea: winning means refusing to quit. ZerØ and 茂千代 (Shigechiyo)make a similar point in ギリギリB-Boys (Girigiri B-Boys) : take charge of your own life instead of watching it go by. For them, making hip-hop is a matter of survival. Moment City lands in the same place: sadness and regret aren’t things to push aside; they push you forward. With Ginga, TAIATARI takes that fight into history: on one side, endless scrolling through YouTube Shorts; on the other, the memory of pilots sent to their deaths during the war.
On production, W Butter brings a heavy sound, while Budamunk, a reference point for lo-fi beatmaking in Japan, shapes stripped-back instrumentals for SEDY NEZZ. Between 18easy’s late-night drives and Ginga’s TAIATARI, the Awesomewave selection holds together on one thread: artists telling their own time, in their own words, straight up.
