Japanese female rappers, critical figures in Japan’s hip-hop landscape, deserve recognition for their contributions to the genre. With a continually expanding roster of artists, more women strive to make their mark. Pioneers such as The Orchids, MoNa a.k.a Sad Girl, Maria, Rumi, Coma-Chi, Awich, and others have paved the way, being among the first to significantly impact the Japanese hip-hop scene. Since then, the number of women active in Japanese hip-hop, including in national rap battle competitions, has dramatically increased. By incorporating unique elements of contemporary Japanese culture and language into their music, these artists have created a fusion style that aligns with current global rap trends and hip-hop culture.

Real Japanese Hip Hop and the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris are hosting a special conference titled “Women in Japanese Hip-Hop: Evolution and Current Impact.” This event explores women’s significant evolution in Japanese hip-hop and their cultural, social, and artistic impact. Targeted at music enthusiasts, cultural studies researchers, hip-hop fans, and anyone interested in the evolution of the Japanese music scene, this conference promises to be an enriching and inspiring exchange platform, highlighting the crucial role of women in Japanese hip-hop.
