DUSTY HUSKY, who has released five solo albums to date, drops TOM SAAB, described as a new milestone in his discography. More than a rap album, the project is presented as an experimental work that explores the depth and possibilities of hip-hop culture itself.
The title TOM SAAB comes from a soup dish originating in the Isan region of northeastern Thailand, a dish DUSTY HUSKY describes as “the most dope, most hip-hop food in Thailand“. The album draws a direct parallel between the cooking process and music production: sourcing ingredients (digging), preparation (sampling), cooking (beats), and finishing, all handled by DUSTY HUSKY himself. The concept goes further than most crate-digger projects. Every sampling source used on the record comes exclusively from Thai vinyl releases, a constraint that doubles as an artistic statement, forcing the music into a specific sonic territory that feels both foreign and deeply personal.
On the production side, DJ SHOKI from the trusted Matatabi crew contributed beats, while singer-songwriter hwamo appears as a guest vocalist. Album arrangements were handled by Noconoco, whose detailed work elevates the record’s overall world to another level. True to form for DUSTY HUSKY’s LP releases, TOM SAAB comes out as a picture vinyl with a double-sided jacket featuring photos of the two bowls of soup that inspired the album, a detail that lands as both a collector’s statement and a genuine love letter to the source material.
