椿 (Tsubaki) and CASPER release “Single Pride” on October 26 as part of ULTRA SMASH, the monthly collaboration series between Japanese female rappers. This is the 42nd episode. ULTRA SMASH has followed a simple, effective format since its launch: each month, two female rappers create a new track together. The format builds a dense catalog that documents where female Japanese rap stands right now, one collaboration at a time.

“Single Pride” starts from a concrete point: both are mothers, and both are rappers, and they describe how those two realities coexist without one erasing the other. The lyrics don’t generalize. They describe specific situations: holding a crying child right before going on stage, the daughter who says “my biggest fan is mom,” a bracelet in place of a wedding ring. The line names the conflict without sentiment.

“満足させるには足りない腕の数” (manzoku saseru ni wa tarinai ude no kazu, “there are never enough arms to satisfy everyone”)

The hook holds two stances:

“薬指にダイヤがなくても愛なら枯らさない” (kusuriyubi ni daiya ga nakute mo ai nara karasanai, “even without a diamond on the ring finger, I won’t let love run dry”) and “逆境がチャンス” (Gyakkyo ga chansu, “adversity is the opportunity”).

No easy resolution, no triumphant declaration. The track stays concrete and carries a kind of pride that doesn’t ask to be validated. Tsubaki has been active in the Japanese female rap scene for several years. CASPER works in a similar register. The two meet here on common ground without either one dominating the other.
