DJ TATSUKI releases “地元どこ (Jimoto Doko / Where’s Your Hometown?) feat. Masato Hayashi & Jin Dogg” on October 25 via his label Chewing Gum and Dreams. Composition by Mill1, production by DJ TATSUKI, mixing by Ryusei, mastering by Zach Pereyra. The single sits in the top 33 of the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart in Japan, and on Apple Music’s “New in Hip-Hop” and “Hip-Hop: Japan” playlists.
One question, two cities
The title asks what rappers ask each other: where are you from? The hook answers before anyone asks: “地元どこ? ここ地元” (jimoto doko? koko jimoto, “where’s your hometown? Right here is my hometown”). The first verse plants the track in western Tokyo: “地元は東京 […] 八王子 東京” (jimoto wa Tōkyō […] Hachiōji Tōkyō). Masato Hayashi was born in Hachioji. Later, “042 03 から全国各地ばら撒け” (zero-yon-ni zero-san kara zenkoku kakuchi baramake, “from 042 and 03, spread it across the country”) names the area code of western Tokyo, then the one for the center.
The second verse changes city: “地元どこ ここ生野 […] ここ大阪 […] I’m from big big O” (jimoto doko, koko Ikuno, koko Ōsaka). Ikuno is a neighborhood in Osaka. The track doesn’t pick between Tokyo and Osaka. It puts the two “heres” side by side.
The most direct line targets people playing a part: “喋り方や仕草真似しても地元じゃねーって分かる / お前がどっから来たか分からなけりゃ俺は信用しねー” (shaberikata ya shigusa mane shite mo jimoto ja nē tte wakaru / omae ga dokkara kita ka wakaranakereba ore wa shinyō shinē, “copy the way I talk and move, I can tell it’s not your hometown / if I don’t know where you’re from, I don’t trust you”). “よそはよそ うちはうち” (yoso wa yoso, uchi wa uchi, “other people are other people, our place is our place”) works as the answer.
The rest stays concrete: a scene in a Don Quijote, CHANEL COCO bought with friends after seeing it on a screen, and “金増えても忘れない 俺の地元はここだぜ” (kane fuete mo wasurenai, ore no jimoto wa koko da ze, “even when the money grows, I don’t forget: my hometown is here”).
DJ TATSUKI made noise in 2022 with “TOKYO KIDS,” built on a sample of Misora Hibari’s “東京キッド” (1950), then with the remix featuring Zeebra and 般若. Masato Hayashi has appeared on RJHH with “暴走東京” and his Zepp Shinjuku show. Jin Dogg was part of the surprise live set that opened BATTLE SUMMIT III at K-Arena Yokohama. Mill1 is already credited on JiLL’s “Asian Gyal.”On RJHH, the “jimoto” keeps coming back: Kawasaki with Central Cartel, Okinawa with YAO. Here, it works as an authenticity test.
