YAO releases “FOR OKINAWA” on September 4. It’s the second single from the collective project bringing together Awich, CHICO CARLITO, ONE OK ROCK, and Paledusk. A video is in production. The subtitle “ありふれた世界の果てに (Arifureta Sekai no Hate ni / At the Edge of an Ordinary World)” accompanies the title on streaming platforms.
The track was born from a conversation between the members during production: Awich and CHICO CARLITO, both from Okinawa, were putting words to the island’s historical reality, its wounds, the weight of what it still carries today. ONE OK ROCK, who grew up in Tokyo, and Paledusk heard that account and decided to take part. Taka (ONE OK ROCK) sings here in a register he describes as new territory for him.
“FOR OKINAWA” says directly what the track is trying to do: carry a message from and for Okinawa, without metaphor. The subtitle “At the Edge of an Ordinary World” holds a tension between the familiar and the everyday on one side, and the outer limit of what ordinary life allows to be seen or said on the other. Okinawa sits at the end of Japan geographically, and at the end of many things the national narrative prefers to keep out of frame. YAO is a project without precedent in how its members combine rap, rock, and metal- genres that almost never cross in Japanese music production. What the four share is that each has a large, established audience and intends to carry a message beyond their respective scenes.
