Founder and writer at Real Japanese Hip Hop, listening to Japanese hip-hop since the late 1990s.
More working Japanese rappers than any list can hold, so treat this as a snapshot rather than a verdict. What follows is twenty-two artists shaping the scene as it stands in 2026, picked on a simple test: who is releasing, touring, and pulling crowds right now. What separates this list from one written three years ago comes down to one thing: local roots. For most of its history, Japanese rap meant Tokyo. That is no longer true, and it is no longer even the interesting part. Kohjiya comes from a district of Nagasaki and took his name from it. MIKADO and 7 (nana) are both from Wakayama, the same age, brought through by the same producer. 5Leaf grew up in Kure, outside Hiroshima. Elle Teresa still lives in Numazu and records there. OZworld runs his label from Okinawa. ¥ellow Bucks carries the Tokai scene from Takayama.
Two circuits amplify it. The battles first. 戦極MCBATTLE (Sengoku MC BATTLE) and the dozens of other tournaments running across the country give rappers a stage where naming your city and defending it is the point, in front of a local crowd that recognizes it. An MC who wins in Osaka or Fukuoka does not just take a tournament; he installs a name in his region. Then RAPSTAR, ABEMA’s competition, arrives with contestants on national television, using their accent, dialect, and hometown as raw material rather than something to sand off. Add the drive of young rappers who have decided they can make it without moving to Tokyo, and you get the current map.
Two other currents run through this list. The end of BAD HOP and Kandytown first: since the split, several members have launched solo careers, Bark, T-Pablow, Keiju, Tiji Jojo, IO, Benjazzy, and both Bark and YZERR are here. Then the space women are taking on the scene. Seven of the twenty-two artists below are women, which wouldn’t have happened ten years ago, and more of them keep arriving without asking anyone’s permission. Awich is the country’s most influential rapper. Both subjects deserve more than a passing paragraph, and I’m working on lists that cover them properly: BAD HOP/Kandytown alumni and their latest releases on one side, Japanese female rappers on the other.
1. Awich
Instagram: @awich098
No argument about the top of this list. Awich is Japan’s most influential rapper, and the records are only part of the reason. Born in Naha in 1986, she grew up looking through the fences of American military bases, on an island returned to Japanese administration only in 1972, and where roughly a quarter of the land is still occupied by those bases. She started writing at nine. She lost her husband at twenty-four. What she built afterward has no real precedent in Japanese rap: a career that treats Okinawan history as material rather than backdrop, and a standing high enough that a feature from her now works as an endorsement across the whole scene. She also appears elsewhere on this list as a guest, on OZworld’s “MIKOTO 〜SUN NO KUNI〜” and on YZERR’s Dark Hero, among others, which tells you where she sits. Every generation below her has passed through her orbit.

2. Yuki Chiba
Instagram: @yukichiba_
Born on 22 April 1990 in Oji, in Tokyo’s Kita ward, he went by KOHH for nine years, and you have probably heard him without knowing it. He is on Frank Ocean’s Blonde (2016) and on Mariah Carey’s “Runway” (2018), placements no other Japanese rapper of his generation matched. Then he stopped. His last show as KOHH was on 28 December 2021, and he retired the name for good. Yuki Chiba came back in 2024 under his civil name with “Team Tomodachi”, built on a chant simple enough that rooms shout it back at full volume, and it became the most inescapable Japanese rap record of the year. STAR followed in 2024, then 億万長者 and 永遠 in 2025, a Budokan headline that July, and Documentary in 2026. Search for Yuki Chiba, and you will find him. He works under a different name now, on purpose.
3. Lex
Instagram: @lex_zx_lex_0
Born in 2002 in the Shonan area of Kanagawa, Lex started uploading to SoundCloud at fourteen and had a debut album out at sixteen, LEX DAY GAMES 4, in April 2019. Seven years on, he fills Zepp venues across the country and headlines the Toyota Arena. That happened almost entirely outside the traditional industry route. The catalog is unusually large for his age: LiFE (2020), LOGIC (2021), King Of Everything (2023), Logic 2 (2024), and Original on 26 November 2025. What holds it together is his willingness to sing about loneliness and self-doubt in a register most Japanese rappers avoid, then set it over arena-ready production. He has called 2025 his comeback year, and he left his hometown for Tokyo permanently in the middle of it, which is audible in the writing. “So Sad” arrived on 9 September 2026.
4. ¥ellow Bucks
Instagram: @yellowbucks
If this piece argues for regional roots, ¥ellow Bucks is the strongest proof. Born in 1996 in Takayama, a mountain town in Gifu Prefecture, he became the central figure of the Tokai scene without ever moving to Tokyo. He recorded his live albums at Nippongaishi Hall in Nagoya. When he covered Yuki Chiba’s “Team Tomodachi”, he called it the Tokai Remix. He started rapping at sixteen in the group Young Busta, then moved to the United States at nineteen, and his current persona emerged from that time. He won season three of Rap Star Tanjou on ABEMA in 2019, which put him on the national map. To The Top (EP, 2019), GAMBLE / Need A Dr (August 2020), Ride 4 Life (July 2022), Jungle 2, Flying To The Top (2024), then Wataru in 2026, titled with his real given name. He explains that the “wa” kanji in Wataru represents the Japanese spirit. YG, Fabolous, Watson, LANA, Yvng Patra, eyden, Candee and CFN Malik all appear on it, a contact list that says something about where he stands. What he is after, he says himself: being recognizable from the choice of beats, before he opens his mouth.
5. OZworld
Instagram: @ozworld_official
An Okinawan, OZworld got noticed with a single in 2018 and broke nationally with the album OZWORLD in 2019. Since then, he has done what few Japanese rappers manage: stayed on the island, built his own label, I’M HAPPY Entertainment, and kept a crew around him instead of moving to Tokyo and signing to someone else. The catalog follows its own internal logic, including a recurring 369 motif across album titles and tour names. UTAGE2.5 in 2024, 369の3 and 369の6 in 2025, “IYASAKA LIT” with CHICO CARLITO the same year, and “おくまれお” in 2026. 2026 was not smooth. He canceled his entire Zepp tour in February, then won BATTLE SUMMIT III in August. Start with “MIKOTO 〜SUN NO KUNI〜” from 2024, with 唾奇 and Awich, which is as close as Japanese rap gets to an Okinawan summit.
6. Masato Hayashi
Instagram: @masatohayashi_
A Tokyo RAPSTAR 2025 finalist whose live instinct outpaced his discography. The “HIROYUKI” video passed three million views, “Ain’t No Love” topped YouTube’s Hype Ranking, and in March 2026 he ran a guerrilla show in Shibuya that organizers shut down after nine minutes because the crowd arrived too fast. The singalong in those nine minutes made the case better than a full set would have.”暴走東京” landed on 1 July 2026, built around conflict and release, with the video playing on Shibuya’s main screens while Hayashi handed out shirts somewhere in the neighborhood. The release party at NEVERLAND was capped at 200 people. The album Iconic followed in September 2026, with nineteen tracks, featuring Kohjiya alongside SEEDA and RYKEY. Putting a 2026 newcomer and two hardcore veterans on the same record is the most interesting thing anyone did this year.

7. 5Leaf
Instagram: @5llllleaf
5Leaf arrived fast and out of nowhere. Her first single, “Way of Life”, came out in September 2023 and went straight to the top of the iTunes hip-hop chart. “Bittersweet”, in February 2024, produced by ZERO of YVES & ADAMS, crossed a million views on YouTube and settled the question of whether the first one was luck. She grew up in Kure, a rural town outside Hiroshima where, as she puts it, nothing happened unless you made it happen yourself. That is not a figure of speech she reaches for; it describes the starting conditions, and it explains the urgency in the delivery. Her debut album bud arrived on 11 February 2025.

8. Bonbero
Instagram: @bonbero3_
Born in 2002 in Chiba Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, Bonbero started uploading to SoundCloud at sixteen, in 2019. What stood out in those early tracks was the precision of the writing and an emotional range you do not expect from a teenager. He joined 夜猫族, an underground collective that gave him structure and where his mix settled: trap, drill, and a British streak he owns openly, Skepta and London grime in particular. He raps about football, anime, and video games with the same care, which gives him a breadth the scene does not always reward. Rule of Groove with Tade Dust in 2021, the singles “Swervin'” and “枯れない” in 2022, the Bandit EP, then Makuhari in 2023 with LANA, Watson and MFS, which passed twenty-three million streams and got him into Apple Music’s UP NEXT selection. The album For A Reason came in 2024, with “Naked Eyes” featuring Kohjiya and 7, two more names from this list.

9. 3Li¥en
Instagram: @3liyen_
Born Elianna in Tokyo, with a Nigerian father and a Japanese mother, and roughly seven childhood years spent in Nigeria. The stage name folds her given name into the word alien, which fairly sums up the position she writes from. She has been blunt about it: people see color first and judge her on her looks before her talent. She started making music in a Nigerian church, and her first song written in Japanese was her breakthrough, the all-woman “チーム友達（GALS Remix）” in 2024 alongside Renée Couto and Charlu. Recording and video were shot the same day. Her influences make an unusual set: Nicki Minaj, Lil Uzi Vert, MC Lyte, Lil’ Kim, and the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku, whose presence is audible in how she builds hooks. YEN in 2024, then High Energy and HIGH ENERGY Pt.2 in 2025, both produced by Foux, and in 2026 “KILLA” with OZworld and “Mooove Bitch” with ANARCHY.
10. YZERR
Instagram: @yzerr_breath
Born in 1995 in Kawasaki, YZERR formed BAD HOP with his classmates in 2014 and fronted it for a decade with no label and no agency. They finished at the Tokyo Dome in February 2024, sold out, the first Japanese rap group to get there. What is poorly understood outside Japan is that his solo catalog is not new. “My way” came out in 2017, Rich or Die in 2019, Rich or Die 2 in 2023, all while the group was running. Since the split he has released Dark Hero (2025), with Lex, Awich, LANA, JP THE WAVY and ¥ellow Bucks on it, then Rich or Die 3 in 2026 and his first national solo tour. He also builds the infrastructure. He programs FORCE FESTIVAL in Kawasaki himself, which is a rarer skill in this scene than rapping.
11. Bark
Instagram: @bark_breath
The deepest voice in BAD HOP, and the member who was never front and center. Born Yuki Hinohara on 18 April 1995, Bark grew up in Ikegami, on the edge of Kawasaki’s industrial zone, a district with a reputation in Japan for its factories and its air. He has known T-Pablow and YZERR since kindergarten. The name came from T-Pablow, and the story has an edge. It was meant for another friend in the group who got arrested before he could rap. T-Pablow turned to him instead and said, why don’t you bark a little. What he says about the BAD HOP decade has nothing glamorous in it. He compares the recording sessions to a self-imposed lockdown, members sleeping on the studio floor. Now he works alone, moves quickly, and says openly that the studio’s solitude weighs on him more than he expected.

12. Litty
Instagram: @littychan
Litty took the least likely route on this list. Born in Boston, raised in Tokyo (where she is now based), she attended a Catholic girls’ school, spent summers studying in the United States, earned a business degree, and then worked a salaried office job. She started making music while working remotely and sent drafts to the producer Lion Melo every day, the bad ones included, until something stuck. “Pull Up” went viral in September 2024 before she had any structure around her. “Cheese” brought EMPIRE, and her debut album Get Litty? arrived in 2026 with 310babii and Worldwide Skippa on it. She works at Atlanta tempos around 100 BPM and sits in a low melodic register nobody else in Japanese rap is using right now. Gunna and Playboi Carti on one side, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B on the other. She also cut a track with NORIKIYO in 2026, a generational handshake worth noticing.
13. ISSUGI
The purist’s pick, and the most prolific person here. From Tokyo’s Nerima ward, ISSUGI found hip-hop through skateboarding in middle school, then started writing and producing at the same time, which is why he exists twice: as an MC under his own name and as a beatmaker under 16FLIP. He works through recurring partnerships rather than one-off features. MONJU, SICK TEAM, the duo records with GRADIS NICE, the BES collaborations- all of it out of Tokyo’s Dogear Records. The run since 2023 alone covers Knight (2023), Masta Key (2024), Day’N’Nite 2 (October 2024) and 氷上 (2025), plus “VYBEZ” in 2026 and an “XL” remix on 29 July 2026. If you want Japanese rap that never chased pop, it lives here.
14. BIM
Instagram: @bim_otg
Born in 1993 between Tokyo and Kanagawa, BIM came out of THE OTOGIBANASHI’S, whose TOY BOX (2012) and BUSINESS CLASS (2015) are reference points for a whole strand of Japanese rap that put tone ahead of aggression. He went solo properly in 2017 and signed to SUMMIT. The solo catalog is deep and steady: The Beam (2018), Veranda (2019), NOT BUSY and Boston Bag (2020), Fruit Juice and Yearn (2021), Because He’s Kind (2022), busy (2024). He also works as a standing duo with PUNPEE, which produced “Iced Out” and “MUSEIGEN” in 2025 and a national tour under that name. His records rotate producers from the SUMMIT orbit, VaVa, Kohjiya, uin, and the result sounds composed rather than assembled. His THE FIRST TAKE session of “Bonita” in 2025 is the quickest way in if you want to hear the voice bare.
15. 7 (nana)
Instagram: @7_official.jp
Born in 2001 in Kainan, Wakayama Prefecture, 7 is the same age as MIKADO and comes from the same prefecture. A Rap Star Tanjou finalist, she performs in a Chinese dress and writes hard, plain storytelling in a voice that sounds like nobody else here. She has been releasing steadily since 7-11 in 2022, followed by 7 (2023) and a Boss Bitch Edition in 2024, then “Flyday” in 2025, and a run of 2026 singles including “峰不二子”. The 7Star EP arrived in 2026 with Deech guesting, released on 7 July, because the number is the whole brand. She appears on the Wakayama posse album alongside MIKADO, on 3Li¥en’s High Energy, and on Bonbero’s “Naked Eyes”. Two women and one man from the same small prefecture, all born the same year, all on national television. That is not a coincidence; it is a scene.
16. Daichi Yamamoto
Instagram: @daichibarnett
From Kyoto, Daichi Yamamoto has a Japanese father and a Jamaican mother, and he studied interactive art at London Arts University from 2012 to 2017 before coming home and joining Jazzy Sport. That biography explains a lot: his English is not a stylistic flourish, and his sense of arrangement comes from somewhere other than the Japanese rap lineage. Andless (September 2019) won a special award at the Apple Vinegar Music Award 2020 and landed him on Spotify’s Early Noise list that same year. Then a long quiet stretch, then a productive one: Secure (2024), Secure + and Box Of Summer (2025), a live album from Zepp Shinjuku, and in 2026 “thinking about you” with KID FRESINO and “Uber” with Salasa.

17. Elle Teresa
Instagram: @elleteresa_
Elle Teresa never moved to Tokyo. Born in 1997, she is from Numazu, a coastal city in Shizuoka Prefecture at the foot of Mount Fuji. She still lives there, and she goes to the studio every day. That is the whole operating model, and it predates the current wave of regional Japanese rappers by most of a decade. She grew up in a family that went out to clubs, was already in them by middle school, and met the Shizuoka rapper Yuskey Carter there, who told her to try rapping. Her debut mixtape Ignorant Tape came out in April 2016 on his West Carter Records and got her into WOOFIN’ magazine’s 2016 Freshman selection. Then PINK TRAP in February 2017, the record that matters. She took trap, a genre saturated with hypermasculine codes, and wrapped it in pink without softening the writing. KAWAII BUBBLY LOVELY followed in March 2018, with Atlanta’s Bali Baby on “ZOMBITCH”.

18. Kohjiya
Instagram: @kohjiya
The first recording session of MADz’s, Kohjiya’s crew, happened in a Nagasaki apartment with a headset mic borrowed from a GTA setup, egg cartons from the local chawanmushi shop stuck to the wall, and free software. He was about twelve. Born in 2002, he takes his name from Kojiyamachi, the district of Nagasaki he grew up in alongside SHIOLA and AURAL, friends since elementary school. They sold 150 CD-Rs at 500 yen each at daytime club events, then bought Roland SP-404 MK II units with money from day labor, passing themselves off as older because their school banned part-time work. Their model was Fla$hBackS, a crew where everyone rapped and produced. As a teenager, Kohjiya handed KEIJU a CD-R after a Nagasaki show. Years later, he co-wrote tracks on KEIJU’s Speed Tape, which topped Apple Music Japan. His own album TIMELESS landed in 2026.

19. Kaneee
Instagram: @kaneeebaby
Born in 2000 and based in Tokyo, Kaneee entered ABEMA’s Rap Star Tanjou 2023 with roughly six months of practice under his belt. He did not win. STUTS noticed him anyway and put him on the POP YOURS 2023 stage, where he performed “Canvas” and the room realized it wasn’t watching a television contestant. YZERR called him into the studio shortly after. T-Pablow found him at a STUTS show at Budokan and said much the same thing. His method is brutally simple: play the beat, freestyle, keep the first good take, delete the weak versions from the folder immediately, never relisten. “Demon”, the darkest track on the ICON EP from November 2023, was made exactly that way. He told Rolling Stone Japan in May 2025 that he wants to play the Super Bowl. He had under three years of career behind him. He was not joking.
→ Read our full profile of Kaneee
20. Charlu
Instagram: @charlu0102
Charlu’s technical signature is speed, a fast-rap delivery that is easy to spot and hard to copy. What sets her apart is how she uses it. She is a single mother, and she writes from that position without turning it into confession, addressing women who have been written out rather than asking for sympathy. Her way in was not hip-hop. She grew up in Shinagawa, Tokyo, came to music through Tokyo Jihen and Sheena Ringo in elementary school, and reached rap later, sideways. Three EPs mark the climb: CHARLESS (2021), OVERFLOW (2023), After Dark (2024). Two 2024 releases moved her into wider view: her verse on “TEAM TOMODACHI (GALS Remix☆)” and the single “My Verse”. She played POP YOURS 2025 with an album timed to it.

21. KID FRESINO
Born in 1993 in Tokorozawa, Saitama, KID FRESINO went solo in 2013 with Horseman’s Scheme, spent two years in New York around 2014, and came back with a way of working that doesn’t fit rap conventions. He tours with a full band. He came up as a DJ and event organizer before he was known as an MC, and he says plainly that he does not consider himself a great natural talent, which reads less as modesty than as a description of method. He made his name with Fla$hBackS, the trio he formed in the early 2010s, whose influence still carries into the current generation. Kohjiya, further up this list, names that crew as his model. Start with “hikari” from July 2025, arranged and mixed by STUTS. The live album 21(live) followed in 2026, with a limited LP dated 4 November.
22. MIKADO
Instagram: @_mikado_ff
Born in 2001 in Wakayama, MIKADO found rap through freestyle battles his friends showed him, decided he wanted to do more, and started recording on his phone. His 2024 breakthrough, a track built on Wakayama dialect, is the clearest evidence that regional specificity now travels rather than holding you back. It took him to Rap Star Tanjou. The output since is heavy: HOMUNCULUS and GUNSO LYFE STYLE in 2025, then NEW ERA and the nineteen-track FAME FLAME in 2026, with T-Pablow, Tiji Jojo, Young Coco and Kohjiya on it. He has moved off the trap metal of his early work toward something catchier without filing the edges down. The album title is a credit. Homunculus produces beats for the Wakayama scene and talks its artists into their own voices. MIKADO and 7 are the same age, and both came up through him. Japanese rappers no longer need Tokyo to be heard, and Wakayama proves it.
The veterans have not stopped
Everything above belongs to the current wave. None of it exists without the generation that built the room, and that generation has not retired. It is still putting out records, including this year. 般若 (Hannya) released 2000%HIPHOP on 1 July 2026, his sixteenth album, with “東京” as the lead track and a national tour behind it. NORIKIYO came out of prison this spring and moved straight away: the track “獄中記“, written inside, then the album L.I.V.S. on 7 August 2026, his thirteenth, which he had finished before going in. ANARCHY put out Crest, produced entirely by KM, with PUNPEE and Watson on it, and you can also hear him on 3Li¥en’s “Mooove Bitch”. AKLO started moving again after seven years without an album, with “ZOOM” alongside BACHLOGIC once more and a second record announced for this year. AK-69 marked thirty years with the best-of BEST OF AK-69 “Yellow Gold” on 14 January 2026. And COMA-CHI released “Jump Up” on 8 July 2026 with DJ Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz, the second installment of her twentieth anniversary. This is not an exhaustive list. Plenty of other Japanese rappers from that generation are recording right now. Read next: ANARCHY · NORIKIYO · COMA-CHI · C.O.S.A. · HANNYA · SHINGO NISHINARI and more … For the history behind all of this, read our anthology of essential Japanese rap albums, 1991 to 2000, then how rap reached Japan and how it built its own culture there.
